When He Returns: A Christian Romance (The Callaghans & McFaddens Book 10) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 1,716 ratings

After years away, Dalton Callaghan has returned home to face the loved ones he left behind.

She’d loved him as a teen, but he’d only had time for his music.

Sierra Collins knows that Dalton’s return means nothing where her heart is concerned. As she’s watched him live his life from a distance, any of the young love she once harbored for him has mellowed into affection and concern. Or so she says…

Music has meant everything to him, but now its silent.

After seeing his bandmate die from the very same drugs he was using, Dalton knows he needs to clean up his life if he wants to live. But sobriety quiets his muse, forcing him to turn to those around him for a distraction and to keep him from repeating past mistakes.

Living in close proximity to each other takes Sierra and Dalton’s acquaintance as teenagers to a friendship as adults. But while Sierra has accepted that there is no hope of anything more between them because of the drastic differences in their lifestyles, Dalton seems to feel differently.

But is he looking for something permanent? Or just a distraction while he tries to figure out the rest of his life?

As a daughter to missionary parents, USA Today bestselling author Kimberly Rae Jordan spent the first 18 years of her life in Asia with only periodic visits "home" to Canada. With limited access to television, Kimberly spent many hours reading and creating stories in her head. Thus began her love of the written word! She enjoys reading Christian romance (Inspirational Romance), Romantic Suspense and most anything by Dean Koontz!

The years that followed her high school graduation and subsequent return to Canada involved becoming a wife and a mother to 4 beautiful children. Though the past several years have taken some unexpected twists and turns and have had ups and downs, God continues to work. "Under construction" is the best way to describe Kimberly's life!

Along with writing, Kimberly loves to read, bake and pin craft ideas on Pinterest...and once in a while, she actually tries her hand at one! Living in the cold of central Canada, Kimberly finds winters a great time to hunker down with a good book or spend time getting to know the characters for her next book. She loves to write about the dynamics of faith, family and love in the context of a fiction novel. In addition to entertaining through her stories, Kimberly hopes to inspire and encourage her readers in their own journeys of faith and love.

With the Callaghan-McFadden family being so large, this has been a long series and it’s actually quite sad to have reached the final book at last. However, in my opinion, the author has saved one of the best stories for this final book. I very much enjoyed reading about Dalton and Sierra, finding the novel gently written and real. They are both such lovely characters and it was wonderful to see Dalton coming out of the unhealthy lifestyle he’d been living and finding his way to a fresh, new one. In all the earlier books in the series, we’d seen him as a teenager, but now there’s an opportunity to see him as a man, a man who has messed up big time but is learning from his mistakes and putting himself onto a new path. Seeing his friendship with Sierra develop was lovely and I was so happy to see them finally get together. This series has been a real mixture for me with some books I’ve really enjoyed and others, not so much, so to finish with such a wonderful story was fantastic.

This is a really sweet book. It's great to see how Ms Jordan has tied everything together in this series. I really enjoyed Dalton and Sierra's story. Loved the character development for them and all the other characters really. I wonder if there'll be something for Elliot and Benjie. ;-)

One small pet peeve though: somehow Mitch's wife, Belle (from Book 6), becomes 'Brooke' halfway through this novel. Not just a one-off mis-mention but for the rest of the novel. That sort of things can be very jarring, especially if one (like me) has followed the series from the beginning and knows every character's names, along with their children and cousins. :-D This almost made me give 4 stars. It makes it seem like the author is not taking the story very seriously, which is, in turn, discouraging for a reader like me.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series of books and Sierra and Dalton's book was one of my favourites. This story drew all of the characters that we have seen over the series back together- especially the prodigal son, Dalton. I loved his character and being able to see his thoughts and feelings as he fought his way back to health, faith and family really made this story for me. The HEA was great to see even if it would have been lovely to have seen them together for a bit more time before the book finished. I am now off to start rereading the series all over again!

What i love about Kimberlys stories is that they are realistic- the pain the main charracters and the family feel in this book is very real and true to how people would react. They are written to be human- not seeing things, putting their foot into it, doing the wrong thing......its what we do and they are no different.
Once again I loved this book although sad the series has ended! Loved having Dalton and Seria's story and it was a great read. Looking forward to future reads from Kimberley!

Great to read a story where we see the real vulnerabilities of the lead characters and their spiritual growth. There are messy bits, pain and difficult conversations between family and friends. Beautiful end to the C&M saga, for now...

    Can't get over this family!!!
This series is so great, full of great messages about mercy, grace and redemption. This book wasn’t different, Dalton’s story is heartbreaking and altogether encouraging. Sierra’s character reflects a true Christian.

Finally, the long anticipated return of Dalton Callaghan. This was an extremely emotional book for me to read for several reasons. First, this is the end of an amazing series that I have loved, every book, every character. I felt an immediate connection to the characters and have faithfully followed their journeys of faith and love. Second, the struggles of Sierra and Dalton resonated with me, deeply. The subjects of drug abuse and abandonment are very personal and poignant. This beautiful series conclusion evoked a myriad of emotions, I laughed and cried and rejoiced in each triumph and heartache.

Unique, relatable characters and timely themes, this book of family connections and lifelong friendships touched my heart. Reading about Dalton’s incredible journey and trials as this Prodigal Son finally returns to his loving family was inspiring and touching. “He would always be an addict. A recovering one, but and addict nonetheless.” Sierra has been a constant figure of strength and endurance. “No one had ever gotten close enough to capture his heart the way she had. His music had been his one and only love.” Sierra had always relied on Ethan and her friends to be her support system. What would she do without them when she was alone? Would a life of service be enough to fill the holes in her heart? “Sierra Collins was anything but frail. If she’d been frail, life would have broken her long before now.” One of my favorite things about this series is the strong female characters. “They stood tall, bending when storms buffeted them but never breaking.” This is one series in which I bought each book to savor and read, again and again. Kudos to Jordan for another wonderful book and strong series finale.

I don't know how to feel. Thankful for such a wonderful ending to this beautiful family saga. Emotional to see it all come to an end. Empowered by the words of wisdom and biblical reminders of the importance of trust in God.

I still remember reading my first book in this series, which at the time was Gabe and Maya's story. Now, seeing it all come together so beautifully is just outstanding. I want to thank Miss Jordan for her talent and for her investment in building such rich and diverse characters whose mistakes, struggles, joys, and blessings reminded me of the power of faith. They reminded me of the blessing of grace, and of the peace that comes from being known by God.
I so look forward to your next series and hopefully we get a glimpse of what the Callaghan's and McFadden's have become.
I highly recommend this book and this entire series. You will be inspired, you will be challenged to look at your life and wonder how you can make your walk with God more than a formality, but a daily choice.

Sad as it is the touted ending of the series😕 I have enjoyed every one of the books in this series. The characters, the love, the faith, the support, so real and engaging. The issues addressed in the stories are deep and valid. The outcome and the endings always good and uplifting. Sad to see the end of it all.

Reviewed in the United States on 15 April 2021
Dalton has always been focused on music, but after the death of a bandmate, he awoke to the need for rehab and, inspired largely by Sierra, a more balanced life; she, meanwhile, is pleased to have her high school crush back as a friend and neighbor, but hesitates to let their relationship become more than that.

    Notes from May 2019:

Plot and Setting: 4.4 -- An interesting mix of plotlines that work surprisingly well together. We have Dalton adjusting to regular life after 10 years as a drug-using celebrity, reintegrating into his family, and trying to figure out what's next for his life. Plus Sierra is navigating friendships new and old, dealing with some deep personal pains and fears, and sorting out her own hangups and dreams for the future. There's a lot going on, but it connects and flows well. A few slightly confusing bits in the timeline.

Characters: 4.5 -- I enjoyed seeing how Dalton and Sierra connect and care for each other, and their friendships with Elliot, Danica, and JD, as well as their interactions with the rest of the family, especially Ethan. All sorts of wonderful characters and relationships.

Mechanics and Writing: 3.8 -- Decent writing, but quite a few small word or punctuation errors. These are mostly distracting without actually hindering comprehension. A few places where internal consistency is lacking, though.

Redeeming Value: 4.8 -- Clean. Dalton's past contained many bad choices, including extensive drug use, but he's gone through rehab and is committed to finding other ways to cope with life now. I appreciate how he keeps meeting with his counselors, and later how he draws near to spiritual mentors as he seeks a genuinely different life. I also appreciated the way that those friends and mentors tend to offer their wisdom with humility. Themes of friendship and forgiveness, using your talents to serve and glorify God, and not making decisions based on fear.

    Personal Enjoyment: 4.8
